Originally built in 1736, as the living quarters for the adjoining cooperage (barrel makers), this property provides sumptuous holiday accommodation over the first and second floors of a magnificent townhouse. It was, for a time, the home of Alexander Knox, a well-known Hollywood actor and his wife, Doris Nolan, also a famous actress. Now fully modernised but retaining many original features it is located in the heart of Berwick upon Tweed. The Cooperage makes a classical but comfortable base from which to explore this historic Elizabethan town, the glorious surrounding countryside and nearby beaches. The defence walls surrounding the town date from 1558. By walking their length, a distance of one mile, it is possible to discover the natural beauty of this border town and its turbulent history. The River Tweed and tributaries provide a great variety of fishing opportunities for both salmon and sea trout. Walking, mountain biking, canoeing. golfing, speedway track all close by. Shops, restaurants, pubs and The Maltings Arts Centre all within a minute's walk.
